Ideal Humidity in Basement
Athens, GA, experiences a humid subtropical climate characterized by hot summers, frequent thunderstorms, and significant rainfall throughout the year. These conditions often lead to higher humidity levels in basements, creating an environment that is susceptible to mold growth, structural damage, and poor indoor air quality. With the clay-heavy soil commonly found in Athens, hydrostatic pressure builds up around the foundation, pushing moisture into the basement. Getting ideal humidity in your basement is essential for maintaining a safe, healthy, and structurally sound home in this region.
Athens Issues Causing Basement Humidity
Homes in Athens often face the following basement humidity-related challenges:
- Heavy Summer Rains: The recurring thunderstorms in summer saturate the soil, creating pressure on the foundation and allowing water to seep into the basement.
- Clay Soil and Hydrostatic Pressure: Athens’ clay-based soil tends to hold water, which increases hydrostatic pressure on the foundation walls and floors, leading to water intrusion and rising humidity levels.
- Elevated Humidity and Condensation: During the hot and humid Athens summers, warm outdoor air can come into contact with cooler basement surfaces, causing condensation and increasing humidity.
